Description:
Photograph of Indian Cemetery. Taken at Somesville in 1843 by Benj. Joy, Ellsworth. Note: Most likely taken by Benj. Joy, Jr. and is a photograph of a photograph; place probably somewhere in the Andes. The Abbe Museum also has a copy as does the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. Smithsonian says date is c.1923. Original record said this was taken at Somesville in 1843 by Benj. Joy, Ellsworth. New information received on Dec. 29, 2014 implies this photo was originally taken by a woman explorer, Harriet Chalmers Adams in the early twentieth century.
