Caption in The Living Past, p. 122: "Somesville's main road in 1870, looking north towards Ellsworth. Mount Desert House on left; A.J. Whiting store on right (note balcony and porch); corner of blacksmith shop on right. Telegraph wires were in use in 1870." Horse-drawn vehicles on each side of rutted dirt roadstopped in front of blacksmith’s shop.

Unknown Lone man walks down middle of road. Telephone poles on left side. Woman and man in doorway, woman and two children standing on steps, three men standing and one seated. Large flagpole to left with “Mt. Desert House, 1888” sign on it. Picket fence running along right side of lawn. Most shutters are open, except for two windows in middle nearest chimney. This print has been attributed to W.H. Ballard, but the photo is probably too early for Ballard to have taken it. Also known as Mount Desert Tavern. [show more]
