Description: Used by Salem Town, surveyor, to survey Mount Desert Island. Small black case lined with printed paper. Contains nine sections for surveying instruments. Case contains - brass protractor, 2 brass dividers, 3 unidentified instruments. Hinged top broken and reattached with string. NOTE: by 2005, there appeared to be only 5 instruments in the case.
Description: Metal bird opens mouth to hold cloth taut for hemming garments. Two velvet pincushions. Velvet worn. Screw key holds bird on table. NOTE: pincushions were not with hemming bird in 2006.
Description: Face white. Brass hands and Roman numerals. Inside case - marked, “Ellsworth Brass”. Another case enclosed works. Also marked, “Brougham London 6097”. Scale reads slow-fast. Swan and floral design imprinted inside. Donor info - belonged to Dr. Kittredge, first doctor on Mt. Desert Island.
Description: Narrow neck. Design on side - two pistols crossed, stars, eagle carrying spears and shield, two flags, 16 stars, cannon balls and anchor. Similar to those made by the American Flask and Cap Co. during the 1850s.
Description: Wooden cap nailed on each end. Marked G. Freeman 1770, H.G. Somes 1870. Donor info - this is the well known Somes Powder horn. Morris Somes was to be the next to sign.
Description: Folding knife with bone handle. Eagle in center of blade. Blade marked, “of the Best Quality. Patent Concave. Henry Clay Knife”. Donor info - knife belonged to Henry Somes, a seaman. The tip of the knife was broken off by the Captain of the ship to prevent murders, (perhaps this particular knife happened to be shaped that way). The knife was carried by Somes in the Navy during the Civil War. Henry Somes’ widow married Lewis Somes. She gave the knife to Glendon Lurvey. [show more]

In envelope addressed to Emma Whitmore, Seal Harbor, Maine with return address R.H. White, Boston, mail order service. Found in building housing old general store, Seal Harbor.
Description: Top lifts to reveal space for books and pencils. One drawer at top with white knob. Two doors with shelves behind. One drawer at bottom missing pull. Decorative cut base. Lender info - used by Lynam Smith during the 1850s when he was the teacher in the first school in Pretty Marsh, called "The Little Red Schoolhouse." Lyman Smith also taught in other area schools. Donor is a descendant of Smith.
