Copy negative created by photographer Marty Lyon so that photographic prints could be made of the original pencil sketch presumably still owned by the Milliken family. Subject is Capt. Lew Stanley, sketch by Aimee Lamb signed and dated 1948. Aimee Lamb lived on Sutton Island in the summers with her sisters, one of whom was Rosamund Lamb. Lew Stanley is an uncle of Ralph W. Stanley. Captain Lewis Gilman "Lew" Stanley was born May 16, 1869, the son of Enoch B. (Sr.) and Caroline H. (Guptill) Stanley of Great Cranberry Island, ME. He was married to Leah Jeanette (Sawyer) Stanley. Captain "Lew" died Jan. 29, 1957. His house was located on "The Pool", and he had a large boathouse there as well. The boathouse blew down in the storm of 1978. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge at Southwest Harbor. He is buried in the Stanley Cemetery on Great Cranberry Island. [show more]

Paul Stubing indicated that this is the vessel "Chester T. Marshall" being lengthened. He said she was cut in the center of the "flat" - usually amidships. He commented that this was during wartime. He continued with an explanation of vessel registration. Over 5 ton, you can document your vessel with the Federal Government and didn't have to pay state fees. This documentation carried with it certain advantages or privileges. Under 5 ton, you can license your boat with the state government and the # will stay with the boat forever. The caption on the picture reads, "Chester T. Marshall - Lengthening At S.W. Boat Corp 1946." According to James Warren's "Maine Sardine Industry History 1875-2000", the "Chester T. Marshall" was built in East Boothbay, Maine, in 1923 and was affiliated with R.B.Stevens Company, Jonesport. The number on the vessel is 222811 and there are two men on board with their backs to the photographer. Ralph Stanley said she was a wet-well lobster smack. [show more]

Plate has a medium tone stain. Three rubber legs on bottom, hardened with age. Thirty-six tiny clear glass cups. Each is 1 and 3/4 inches high. There is one cup missing. The donor indicated that these are from the Hall Quarry Chapel which existed from 1890-1940.
